Professional Wedding Photography: An Overview
As far as I’m aware, no other website exists that discusses the nuts and bolts of starting, developing, and maintaining a successful wedding photography business.

This site is for the ambitious photographer who is ready to branch out of his or her comfort zone and make an impact through photography. It includes over-the-backyard-fence advice, examples of how and when not to apply the many techniques described herein, and much more useful information for the aspiring photographer and the working professional alike.
The modern, tech-savvy photographer may certainly look up broad pointers on wedding photography online, but I have yet to find anything like to the information I’ll be giving out for free on this site. Although there are some online videos discussing pricing, shot execution, the basics of photography, etc., these topics are all discussed at a high level, leaving the small town studio just starting out with little information about the actual step-by-step process of getting a business up and running.
As you consider the viability of opening a studio dedicated to wedding photography, I’d like to remind you of the importance of conducting extensive market research, talking to potential clients and brides, and learning everything you can about their wants and needs. After you’ve done your homework and are confident in starting a wedding photography business, you’ll be ready for whatever comes your way.
Professional wedding photography is a rewarding field to work in, but success requires hard work and determination. But remember that photography may drain you of energy, resources, loved ones, and even financial standing if you let it. If you don’t keep your professional and mental faculties in check, it can easily consume you.
I know I can’t “teach” folks who have been taking pictures for years anything new, but I do think I’ve learned some valuable lessons and gained some interesting insights into the art and business of wedding photography. I’ve been a professional wedding and event photographer for over four decades, and I’d like to share what I’ve learned in the hopes that it may help you improve your own wedding photography.
I get that the advent of digital photography has made it possible for every schmuck with a smartphone to take a passable picture by pointing and clicking. The accessibility of modern cameras has allowed anyone to declare oneself a photographer. But in fact, just because you have a sophisticated camera and it shoots an acceptable photo does NOT make you a professional wedding photographer – far from it.
Wedding photography is a specialized field that requires training and experience that most people aren’t prepared to put in. That’s why there’s always going to be a need for a professional wedding photographer.
It’s true that your photographic knowledge will be invaluable in this line of work, but you’ll also need people skills to succeed. Keep in mind that the bride’s normal level of calm and composure may be significantly altered on the day of the wedding.
I’ve had brides who were so overcome with emotion that they refused to speak to me or let me help them and instead threw me out of the dressing room. After letting her cool off for half an hour, the rest of the day went off without a hitch. Once upon a time, we were inseparable.

The Inspiration Behind This Webpage

Think about this for a second. Why, out of all the different kinds of photography you might perform, do you want to focus on weddings?
- Since it’s so simple?
- Because of the appeal?
- Just for the heck of it, eh?
- Excitement… maybe?
Or any of the dozens or perhaps hundreds of other possibilities.
In response to these inquiries, I will say categorically that wedding photography is NOT simple; it may seem glamorous at first, but that feeling will quickly fade as the gravity and realism of the photographic scenario sinks in (i.e., don’t mess up). It’s a good time, but after hundreds, if not thousands, of weddings, you can start to feel burned out on the whole thing. So, tell me, why do YOU choose to photograph weddings?
If you are unable to respond, it is time to take stock of who you are and what motivates your photographic mind. I’m curious as to what inspires you to tilt your camera in the direction of a bride.
Perhaps I can be of some assistance here…What drives me is the opportunity to collaborate with others to create heirlooms that will last a lifetime and beyond. What they value most is the time spent remembering. During the day, you get to witness them at their best (and worst). Having the foresight to determine what should be preserved and what should not. It’s witnessing the joy and relief on their faces as they view the completed images, which evoke so many happy memories of the event.
Getting a sharp, well-exposed bridal image that also conveys the photographer’s artistic vision and the family’s wishes is a top priority. ensuring that every aspect of the bride’s big day is covered and bringing back happy memories. It’s the satisfaction of knowing I gave my all to every wedding I photographed.

The only thing left after you’ve folded up your garment and put it away is… We’ve received the tuxedos back… The limos have left the scene… hundreds of well-wishers attended the reception, and the floor has been cleaned clean. and now we’re above the rainbow…
You guessed correctly; these are the wedding photos you took. And that’s why they should hire a professional photographer to document their special day.
The pressure is on for you as a young wedding photographer.
So long as you appreciate this and are ready to take on this massive yet rewarding duty, we may move forward with launching your wedding photography business. In order to photograph a bride, you must first learn how to land your first client, how to sell wedding packages that make the bride happy, how to deal with the many different types of people you’ll meet at weddings, and much more.
As such, I plan to write extensively on a wide range of topics intended to instruct readers in the art and science of wedding photography. Everything you need to know to launch a thriving wedding photography business in your area is covered in detail.
At the conclusion of this website, you’ll find a number of sample wedding photographs that you should learn well enough to replicate on demand. These illustrations will serve as springboards from which you can launch your own unique creative expression. You can also use this site to learn everything you need to know to launch and run a successful wedding photography business. I’ll also be detailing actionable steps you can take to launch your wedding photography business with minimal fuss and maximum impact on your neighborhood and beyond.I’ve spent the better part of 40 years as a professional wedding photographer collecting a library of books on the subject. Those books mostly consisted of links to sites that showed me how to “take” pictures rather than how to launch and sustain a profitable wedding photography enterprise. Yes, there is a distinction, and it was very annoying.
Which is why I’ve decided to create this website. If you take a novel approach, the women you meet with will appreciate what you have to offer and be willing to pay a higher price for it. You can and will have great success with your new photography business thanks to your existing abilities, the precise techniques you’ll learn here, and the ongoing professional study you’ll pick up and enhance as your business expands.
Remember that it takes time for a business to become profitable, often between 12 and 24 months. Most significantly, you must be available on the wedding day itself. There simply can’t be a day-and-done approach to running a wedding photography business. Brides will start coming your way as soon as you start actively promoting to them and networking with other local wedding professionals. More information on this will be forthcoming.
The course also covers wedding photography and how to bundle such services to maximize their features and benefits. Your new wedding photography firm might become a leader in its field within a matter of years, if not months.

Even though you’ve probably photographed dozens, if not hundreds, of weddings by this point and they’re all pretty much the same, every bride and groom is on the lookout for something special and original for their big day. This is where your unique sense of style and knowledge of photography come in.Your technically flawless and expertly performed pictures, combined with some fairly aggressive advertising and stellar service, can forever alter the standard for wedding photography in your area. Many photographers have come and gone from the industry during my time here. It’s disheartening to see so much potential wasted in this way. I’ve long pondered how I may assist them in realizing more success with their own abilities, and so here it is: a comprehensive “website,” if you will, on how to launch and maintain a wedding photography business.
Please understand that there is no way I can show you every single step you need to follow to launch and maintain a successful business. I will not belittle your intelligence by laying out every last detail for you. However, I have provided a lot of details that aren’t discussed in many other sources.
Simply by creating this website, you have proven to me and yourself that you are serious about making a go of your photography. You’re sick of sitting on the bench and missing out on the action in the photographic world.
So, you can do that with the help of this site and your own ingenuity and photographic expertise. The first step is to study this page carefully, make notes, consider your local market, your photographic ambitions, and the direction you ultimately choose to take your career in photography. In order to help you get your wedding photography business off the ground, we have included a comprehensive checklist at the end of this webpage.
Section3
Why Visiting This Site Is Useful

If you’re interested in learning more about the wedding photography industry, you’ve come to the right place! Also included are numerous examples from my own wedding photography as well as extensive descriptions of the technical aspects of each photograph. With any luck, you’ll be able to use this newfound awareness of light to create stunning wedding photos for the happy couple.
You, as a budding photographer, will benefit much from guidance and a strong foundation upon which to expand. I’m going to assume that you don’t know anything about starting a business. We’ll go through f-stops, shutter speeds, and the other technical aspects of taking a picture, but I’ll presume you’re familiar with the fundamentals already. But my primary goal in writing this is to educate you about the wedding photography industry and what it takes to succeed in it.
To get the most out of this website, you should read and understand the information provided, as well as conduct your own research, take notes as they come to you, and eventually return to this section to start formulating a strategy based on your unique set of circumstances.
While I will provide you with information about various packages, I will not recommend any of them. What is best for your neighborhood is up to you to decide. I’ll show you several different wedding photography packages that you can sell to the happy couple.
It’s possible you’ll need to try out a few different packing systems before you settle on one you like and, more crucially, one that the bride in your region is willing to buy.
Would you ever consider being a spy? It’s a dream of most people’s since childhood, and now that you have your own business, you can finally make it a reality. If you have local competition, it would be wise to “spy” on them to discover what they’re offering. Think like the bride and groom for a moment and create a wedding package based on your research. Above all else, remember that the bride and groom are human beings just like you.

Also, I feel it’s important to point out that we artists aren’t always the best when it comes to the nitty-gritty of running a business. We despise having to constantly mind our promotions, count funds and track cash flow, and advertise our products to consumers. If you’re serious about making it as a wedding photographer, though, you’ll have to get over this and either immerse yourself in learning everything you can about company management, or delegate these essential tasks to an employee. Promotion and advertising are covered in depth in later pages of this site.
I know you just want to be out there shooting and making “pretty” photographs, but if you want to make it as a wedding photographer, you have to get your hands filthy with the business side of things. Unless you have someone else handle all the marketing and day-to-day operations, you will need to learn the ins and outs of promotion at some point.
Customers with a spending capacity of $5,000.00, $10,000.00, or more are not your target demographic when you’re just getting started.Your mission is to start off modestly and expand your business by providing excellent photography services to happy couples in a fair and trustworthy manner. Doing so will bring about several financial and creative benefits.
You too may earn a living as a professional photographer with the help of this site’s resources and your own talent in photography and sales. As a result, our site caters to experienced photographers and those who are working to improve their technical abilities. And because of these abilities, hopes to branch out and establish a name for themselves in wedding photography in their hometown. They also recognize that it takes time to establish a successful company.
